As part of the OpenLabs INSA meeting gathering researchers and students from the INSA Group in Toulouse on June 9–10, we are pleased to highlight the work of our Master’s student Rania Chahrazed Moulessouiga from Université Paris-Saclay.
Rania is currently carrying out her final-year internship at the Laboratory of Chemical Process Safety (LSPC), INSA Rouen Normandie, under the supervision of Dr. Lokmane Abdelouahed and Dr. Zineb Boutamine, with the collaboration of Dr. Ouafa Belkacem. Her work focuses on the development of innovative ZnO/Biochar biocomposites for the photocatalytic degradation of microplastics in water.
This internship contributes to the expansion of the PHYBIOMED project toward emerging contaminants, particularly microplastics and nanoplastics, which represent a growing environmental challenge worldwide.
During the OpenLabs INSA event, Rania’s work was recognized with a double award, receiving both the Best Pitch Award and the Best Poster Award. These distinctions reflect the quality of her research and her ability to communicate scientific results effectively.
The internship is fully funded by INSA Rouen Normandie, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to supporting young researchers and developing innovative solutions for environmental protection and sustainable water management.

During this event, Rania will present the first results of her work entitled “Development of a ZnO/Biochar Biocomposite for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Microplastics”, carried out within the OpenLabs INSA initiative. This presentation will provide an opportunity to discuss innovative bio-based materials and advanced photocatalytic processes for tackling emerging contaminants in aquatic environments.
