From Wastewater to a Resource: Designing Smarter Treatment with Aspen Plus
Congratulations to Fatima ACHNETE on her Masterβs thesis defence!
During her internship at LSPC, INSA Rouen Normandie, Fatima explored how process simulation can support the development of advanced wastewater treatment systems.
Her work brought three complementary technologies into Aspen Plus:
Photocatalysis β modelling light-driven pollutant degradation.
Electrocoagulation β modelling electrochemical coagulant generation.
Microbial fuel cells β linking biological treatment with electricity generation.
By adapting kinetic models and assessing them against published experimental data, Fatima developed a foundation for exploring treatment scenarios. She then combined electrocoagulation and photocatalysis within a single flowsheet representing textile wastewater.
This work contributes to the PRIMA PHYBIOMED objectives by connecting process modelling with the development of treatment strategies towards water reuse. Experimental calibration and validation will help consolidate this approach.
Fatima completed this research as part of her Master of Excellence in Materials and Energy Engineering at Mohammed First University in Oujda, under my supervision and that of Prof. Mouncef NEFFA, whom I thank for our collaboration.
Well done, Fatima! Wishing you every success in your next steps.
