PHYBIOMED (From Wastewater to Resources: Water • Energy • Food)Â
 Advancing Sustainable Water, Energy and Food Solutions for the MediterraneanPHYBIOMED is a PRIMA-funded international research and innovation project dedicated to transforming wastewater into valuable resources through an integrated Water–Energy–Food Nexus approach.Bringing together leading universities, research centers, industries, and stakeholders from across the Mediterranean region, PHYBIOMED aims to develop innovative solutions for wastewater treatment, resource recovery, renewable energy production, and sustainable water management.
Our Vision
Water scarcity, drought, and increasing environmental pressures are among the most critical challenges facing Mediterranean countries. PHYBIOMED addresses these challenges by viewing wastewater not as a waste stream, but as a valuable resource that can contribute to water security, renewable energy generation, and sustainable food production.
Â
Our Approach
PHYBIOMED combines advanced physicochemical and biological treatment technologies to:
 – Recover and reuse wastewater for agricultural, industrial, and urban applications;
 – Produce renewable energy through biogas generation and combined heat and power (CHP) systems;
 – Capture and valorize carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚);
 – Develop biofertilizers and biostimulants from recovered biomass;
 – Improve water governance through innovative digital tools and water accounting methodologies.
The project integrates cutting-edge technologies including advanced oxidation processes, electrocoagulation, microalgae cultivation, anaerobic digestion, COâ‚‚ capture systems, and smart decision-support platforms.
Innovation for a Circular Economy
At the heart of PHYBIOMED lies the ambition to create a circular and sustainable model where water, energy, nutrients, and carbon are continuously recovered and reused.To support this vision, the project will develop:
 – WatTool, a real-time monitoring and optimization platform for wastewater treatment and resource management;
 – DST (Decision Support Tool), an intelligent system helping stakeholders select the most suitable treatment technologies and water reuse strategies according to local conditions.
International Collaboration
PHYBIOMED brings together partners from France, Morocco, Algeria, Portugal, Spain, Egypt, and Türkiye, creating a multidisciplinary network of experts in wastewater treatment, renewable energy, biotechnology, water governance, and sustainability assessment.
Contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals
PHYBIOMED directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 13 – Climate Action
Through innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, PHYBIOMED aims to contribute to a more resilient, sustainable, and resource-efficient Mediterranean region: Transforming wastewater into water, energy, and value for a sustainable future.
