Deliverable D5.2: Characterising Biomass for Bioactive Molecules and Products
This report will be published as a scientific article. The complete report remains confidential pending publication; experimental profiles, sample identities and detailed findings are withheld.
Deliverable D5.2, Report of the preliminary characterization of bioactive molecules/products, addresses an important step in PHYBIOMED Work Package 5: understanding biomass composition to guide the assessment of potential valorisation routes.
The public summary describes a complementary analytical framework combining Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and biochemical reference measurements.
These approaches can help organise compositional information and guide further investigation. The report explains why spectral patterns, biochemical composition and biological activity represent distinct levels of evidence. Identifying a chemical feature does not, by itself, demonstrate the effectiveness of a bioactive product.
This preliminary characterisation provides a framework for subsequent analytical validation and functional assessment.
D5.2 supports PHYBIOMED’s ambition to explore valuable products from recovered biomass, contributing to more circular connections between water treatment, resource recovery and sustainable production.
Keywords: Biomass characterisation; bioactive molecules; FTIR; NIRS; biochemical analysis; biomass valorisation.
