Deliverable D3.1: Detailed Characterization Report of Microalgae

The PHYBIOMED consortium is pleased to announce the publication of Deliverable D3.1 – Detailed Characterization Report of Microalgae, a key milestone within Work Package 3 (WP3) dedicated to biomass valorization and bioenergy production.

This report presents a comprehensive physicochemical characterization of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae, Laminaria digitata macroalgae, sludge, and selected metal oxide nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃, CoO, ZnO, and NiO). A wide range of analytical techniques—including TS/TVS determination, biochemical composition analysis, CHNS elemental analysis, COD measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)—were employed to evaluate the properties of these materials.

The results confirm the high potential of microalgae as a sustainable substrate for anaerobic digestion and renewable bioenergy production, while providing a robust scientific basis for investigating the role of nanoparticles in enhancing methane production and process efficiency. The characterization also establishes the experimental foundation for the next phase of the project, which will focus on optimizing anaerobic digestion performance and resource recovery.

Deliverable D3.1 represents an important step towards the PHYBIOMED objective of developing innovative, circular, and sustainable solutions for the Water–Energy–Food Nexus in the Mediterranean region.
