Deliverable D1.2: Exploring Photocatalytic Pretreatment for Water Treatment

This report will be published as a scientific article. The complete report remains confidential pending publication; experimental systems, operating conditions and detailed results are withheld.

Deliverable D1.2, Photocatalytic pre-treatment study, addresses the potential role of light-driven catalytic processes in PHYBIOMED’s integrated wastewater treatment approach.

Developed within Work Package 1, the public summary introduces the principles of photocatalytic pretreatment and the questions needed to assess its contribution to a wider treatment sequence.

A central scientific distinction concerns physical removal, chemical transformation and mineralisation. These outcomes require different types of evidence. Understanding the fate of constituents is therefore essential when interpreting an observed treatment response.

The report also outlines practical considerations for process integration, including compatibility with subsequent operations, catalyst recovery and stability, and resource requirements.

D1.2 contributes to the scientific framework for evaluating advanced pretreatment approaches within PHYBIOMED, supporting the project’s broader goals of sustainable water management and circular resource use.

Keywords: Photocatalysis; wastewater pretreatment; advanced oxidation; treatment assessment; process integration; circular economy.
