Title: Activated carbon derived from date pit and sodium alginate, application to the adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution: Equilibrium isotherms, kinetic study, and regeneration
In this study, biocomposite beads were developed by encapsulating activated carbon produced from mixed Algerian date pits into a sodium alginate matrix. The material was successfully applied for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions, achieving an adsorption capacity of 23.53 mg·g⁻¹ under optimal conditions. The adsorption process was best described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Regeneration tests also demonstrated the good reusability of the developed adsorbent, highlighting its potential as a low-cost and sustainable solution for wastewater treatment.
This work contributes to the circular bioeconomy approach promoted by the PHYBIOMED project through the valorization of date palm residues and the development of innovative materials for water depollution.
